Sanya Gbemileke

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is an exploration of the unseen parts of human existence — the spirit, the soul, the mind, and the quiet experiences that shape who we become.

I am interested in moments that cannot always be explained: silence, memory, reflection, vulnerability, growth, and the search for meaning. Through painting, I translate these internal experiences into visual forms, allowing colour, space, texture, and subtle symbols to carry emotions that words sometimes cannot express.

My practice is deeply connected to my Nigerian experience and to the cultural and spiritual ideas that have surrounded me throughout my life. However, I do not seek to simply reproduce culture. Instead, I draw from it as a foundation for exploring universal questions about consciousness, identity, spirituality, and human existence.

In recent works, I have become increasingly interested in simplicity and the power of small details. A recurring leaf has become a quiet visual presence within my paintings — a symbol of life, growth, transition, and the continuous cycle of becoming.

For me, painting is not only about creating an image. It is a way of listening to myself, questioning what lies beneath the visible, and creating a space where the viewer can pause and encounter something within themselves.

My intention is for each work to offer that moment of pause — a quiet conversation between the artwork, the viewer, and the unseen world within us.

EXHIBITION STATEMENT

This exhibition brings together works that reflect on consciousness, self-awareness, inner transformation, spirituality, memory, and the emotional experiences that often remain hidden beneath everyday life. Rather than presenting these ideas as fixed answers, the paintings create spaces for contemplation and personal interpretation.

At the heart of the exhibition is the relationship between the spirit, the soul, and the mind — three interconnected dimensions through which we experience ourselves and the world around us. The works consider what happens within us when we become still enough to listen, question, remember, heal, and grow.

Sanya Gbemileke approaches these ideas through a language of colour, movement, space, and symbolic details. His paintings balance the tangible with the intangible, creating visual environments where silence and emotion can coexist.

The recurring textures introduces another layer to the works. It speaks of growth, fragility, renewal, and the continuous journey of becoming. It is small, but deliberate — a reminder that transformation often begins quietly.

Ultimately, Spirit, Soul & Mind invites the viewer to slow down and look beyond the surface. These paintings are not intended to tell the viewer exactly what to feel. They create room for each person to bring their own memories, questions, experiences, and interpretations into the work.

The exhibition is therefore both a visual and inward journey — a conversation between what can be seen and what can only be felt.
